Following the 1980 military coup in Turkey, a rector was appointed to the Bogazici University for the first time in its history. The appointment was made possible by the architect of the coup, Kenan Evren.

The second time a rector was appointed was in 2021. This time, the order came from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. This intervention was met with resistance which then turned into one of the longest civil disobedience protests in the history of the Republic.

For supporters of the Erdogan government, the university is right where it should be. For members of the resistance, one of the most important institutions in the country is about to be destroyed.

This is the story of the fight for academic freedoms in Turkey.
